Agar Agar (Gelidiella Acerosa) is a substance obtained from several varieties of seaweed that grows off the East Indian coast. Agar consists of a mixture of agarose and agaropectin. Agarose, the predominant component of agar, is a linear polymer, made up of the repeating monomeric unit of agarobiose. Agarobiose is a disaccharide made up of D-galactose and 3,6-anhydro-L-galactopyranose. Minoya Tarozaemon in Japan discovered Agar around 1658.

Important safety information - please read before use

Agar is a common food-grade gelling agent, but it swells with water - a few cautions are important.

  • Take with plenty of fluid: agar absorbs water and swells - always take it with a full glass of water, and do NOT use it if you have difficulty swallowing, a narrowing of the esophagus or gut, or any bowel obstruction, because of the risk of choking or blockage.
  • Get medical help: seek immediate medical attention if chest pain, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing or breathing occurs after taking it.
  • Medications: agar is a bulk fiber that can slow the absorption of medicines - take it well apart from any medication and consult your practitioner.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: there is not enough reliable information on agar in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it is best avoided.
  • Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Agar Agar Extract
What is Agar Agar (Gelidiella acerosa) extract?
Agar agar is a liquid extract made from Gelidiella acerosa, a red seaweed (Rhodophyta) harvested off the coasts of East Asia. Agar - also called kanten or China grass - is the classic plant-based gelling substance, made of the polysaccharides agarose and agaropectin, and it is best known as a vegan alternative to gelatin for thickening and setting foods. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Two things are worth knowing: this is agar from a red seaweed, a different substance from carrageenan (which comes from Irish moss, Chondrus crispus, that we sell separately), and it should not be confused with agarwood (Aquilaria) or fly agaric (Amanita), which only share part of the name; and agar naturally swells and gels when it meets water, so please read the safety notes below. Note that a few drops of a liquid extract do not gel the way a spoonful of agar powder does.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Gelidiella acerosa seaweed; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water, giving it a milder taste that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
Is agar the same as carrageenan, agarwood or fly agaric?
No - several names are easy to mix up, so it helps to be clear. Agar (from our seaweed Gelidiella acerosa, and from related red algae such as Gelidium and Gracilaria) is made mainly of agarose; carrageenan is a different gelling polysaccharide from a different red seaweed, Irish moss (Chondrus crispus), which we sell separately - both are red-algae hydrocolloids, but they are not the same. Agarwood is something else entirely: it is the resinous heartwood of Aquilaria trees (oud), unrelated to seaweed. And fly agaric is Amanita muscaria, a mushroom - it only shares letters with "agar." We label ours clearly as agar agar (Gelidiella acerosa), the red seaweed agar, so it is not confused with carrageenan, agarwood or the mushroom.
How do I use Agar Agar liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml), up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner, diluted in a full glass of water, tea or juice. Always take it with plenty of fluid. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Because agar can affect how the body absorbs medicines, take it well apart from any medication. Please read the safety information below before use, especially if you have any difficulty swallowing. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Agar Agar right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Agar is a common food-grade gelling agent with a good safety record as a food, but a few cautions are important because it swells with water. Swelling and swallowing: always take it with plenty of fluid, and do NOT use it if you have difficulty swallowing, a narrowing of the esophagus or gut, or any bowel obstruction, because of the risk of choking or blockage; seek immediate medical attention if chest pain, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing or breathing occurs after taking it. Medications: agar is a bulk fiber that can slow the absorption of medicines, so take it well apart from any medication and consult your practitioner. Pregnancy and nursing: there is not enough reliable information on agar in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it is best avoided. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
