Frequently Asked Questions about Arrowroot Extract
What is Arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea) extract?
Arrowroot is a liquid extract of the dried root (rhizome) of Maranta arundinacea, the true or West Indian arrowroot, a tropical plant of the Marantaceae family. Its starchy rhizome is best known as a fine, easily digestible food starch. This tincture is cold-macerated in organic alcohol from root responsibly sourced from India and prepared in the USA. Please note this is a concentrated liquid extract, not the culinary arrowroot flour or starch. Read the short safety note below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Arrowroot; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol, the classic cold-maceration method that yields a more concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical.
Is this the same as other plants called arrowroot?
No - the name arrowroot is used for several unrelated starchy plants. Ours is the true or West Indian arrowroot, Maranta arundinacea. It is not Japanese arrowroot, which is Pueraria lobata (we sell that separately as Kudzu), and it is definitely not Florida arrowroot (Zamia), which is a toxic cycad, nor Polynesian arrowroot (Tacca). We label ours clearly as Maranta arundinacea.
How do I use Arrowroot liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is about 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water, tea or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Arrowroot right for everyone? Safety information.
Arrowroot is a starchy food plant and is considered low in toxicity. A couple of points are worth knowing. Taking too much may cause bloating, and anyone who is allergic to similar starches should avoid it. During pregnancy and nursing, arrowroot is generally considered fine in ordinary food amounts, but larger concentrated amounts are best avoided unless advised by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Arrowroot (Maranta Arundinacea) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
