Important safety information - please read before use

Catechu is well tolerated in small amounts, but its high tannin content brings several specific cautions.

  • Dose and tannins: large amounts can cause nausea, vomiting and stomach upset, and very high tannin doses can be harmful. Keep strictly to the suggested serving and to short-term use; taken in excess or for long periods it can reduce your absorption of iron and other minerals (best not taken with meals or iron supplements).
  • Blood pressure: catechu may lower blood pressure - use caution if you already have low blood pressure or feel faint.
  • Blood thinning: it has mild antithrombotic properties and may add to the effect of anticoagulant medicines (such as warfarin) or blood-thinning supplements like ginkgo or garlic. If you take any of these or are due to have surgery, consult your practitioner first.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: food amounts are considered fine, but do NOT use concentrated medicinal amounts during pregnancy or while breastfeeding without professional advice.
  • Allergy: allergic reactions to acacia are rare but possible.
  • Contains alcohol. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Catechu Extract
What is Catechu (Acacia catechu) extract?
Catechu is a liquid extract of black catechu, also called cutch - the concentrated extract of the heartwood of Acacia catechu (now also classified as Senegalia catechu), a tree of the Fabaceae (legume) family, known in Ayurveda as Khadira. Note that although our listing calls it "herb," catechu is really a concentrated heartwood extract rather than a leafy herb. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. Catechu is very rich in tannins and catechins (the astringent compounds it is named after), which is why it carries some specific safety cautions - around dose, blood pressure and blood thinning - explained below. It should not be confused with Areca catechu, the betel nut palm (which we sell as Bing Lang), a completely different plant that merely shares the species name "catechu."
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Acacia catechu (black catechu / cutch); only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Both are very astringent. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The catechu inside is identical - and so are the safety cautions, which apply to both.
Is Acacia catechu the same as Areca catechu (betel nut) or other "catechu"?
No - the name "catechu" is shared by more than one plant, so it helps to be clear. Ours is Acacia catechu (Senegalia catechu), a legume-family tree whose heartwood gives black catechu or cutch. Areca catechu is a completely different plant - the betel nut palm, which we list separately as Bing Lang - and it only happens to share the species word "catechu." There is also "pale catechu" or gambir, which comes from yet another plant, Uncaria gambir. And within the acacias, ours is different from Shikakai (Acacia concinna), Acacia bark (Acacia arabica) and Gum Arabic (Acacia senegal). We label ours clearly as catechu / black catechu (Acacia catechu) so it is not confused with any of these.
How do I use Catechu liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. It is very astringent (drying) and tannin-rich, so dilute it well and do not exceed the suggested serving - large amounts of tannins can upset the stomach and, over time, reduce iron absorption. To help protect iron levels, it is best not taken with meals or iron supplements. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water also softens the taste. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Catechu right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Catechu has been used for centuries and is generally well tolerated in small amounts, but its high tannin content brings some specific cautions. Dose and tannins: large amounts can cause nausea, vomiting and stomach upset, and there is a real risk of harm from very high tannin doses - keep strictly to the suggested serving and to short-term use; taken in excess or for long periods it can reduce your absorption of iron and other minerals. Blood pressure: catechu may lower blood pressure, so use caution if you already have low blood pressure or feel faint. Blood thinning: it has mild blood-thinning (antithrombotic) properties and may add to the effect of anticoagulant medicines (such as warfarin) or blood-thinning supplements like ginkgo or garlic - if you take any of these or are due to have surgery, consult your practitioner first. Pregnancy and nursing: food amounts are considered fine, but do NOT use concentrated medicinal amounts during pregnancy or while breastfeeding without professional advice. Allergy: allergic reactions to acacia are rare but possible. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Do not give it to infants or young children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Catechu (Acacia Catechu) Herb is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
