Frequently Asked Questions about Alaskan Sea Cucumber Extract
What is Alaskan Sea Cucumber (Apostichopus californicus) extract?
Alaskan Sea Cucumber is a liquid extract of the whole dried California sea cucumber, Apostichopus californicus (long known in the fishery and literature as Parastichopus californicus) - a marine animal, an echinoderm of the class Holothuroidea, wild-harvested off Alaska and the Pacific coast, not a plant. It is offered here as a traditional alcohol tincture. It is a marine-animal extract and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease; please read the safety note below, as sea cucumber may affect blood clotting.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same whole Apostichopus californicus sea cucumber; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, a good choice for those avoiding alcohol. Choose whichever suits you. The material inside is identical, and the same notes apply to both.
How is this different from your other sea cucumbers?
We carry three different sea cucumber species, each a distinct marine animal. This page is Alaskan Sea Cucumber, Apostichopus californicus (the California sea cucumber; also written Parastichopus californicus), from the Pacific. Our Cucumaria frondosa is the orange-footed Atlantic sea cucumber, and our Holothuria atra is the black sea cucumber (lollyfish). They are different species from different oceans, so if the exact species matters to you, check the scientific name. This page is Apostichopus californicus.
How is Alaskan Sea Cucumber extract used?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops shown on the label, in a little water or juice, up to the suggested frequency. Because this is an alcohol tincture, it may be diluted in water. Store in a cool, dry place, and keep out of reach of children.
Is Alaskan Sea Cucumber (Apostichopus californicus) safe? Safety information.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Alaskan Sea Cucumber (Apostichopus Californicus) Whole is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
