Important safety information - please read before use

Sea cucumber is eaten as a food in many cultures, but please read these cautions before use.

  • Blood clotting: sea cucumber body wall contains fucosylated chondroitin sulfate and sulfated fucan, which can act like blood thinners and may increase bleeding risk. If you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, or are approaching surgery, consult your practitioner before use.
  • Saponins: sea cucumbers naturally contain saponins (holothurins), so keep to the suggested serving and do not use it continuously.
  • Allergy: it is a marine animal, so avoid it if you have a seafood allergy.
  • Marine origin: like other seafood, it can carry trace heavy metals, so short-term use at the suggested serving is sensible.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: avoid use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Alaskan Sea Cucumber Extract
What is Alaskan Sea Cucumber (Apostichopus californicus) extract?
Alaskan Sea Cucumber is a liquid extract of the whole dried California sea cucumber, Apostichopus californicus (long known in the fishery and literature as Parastichopus californicus) - a marine animal, an echinoderm of the class Holothuroidea, wild-harvested off Alaska and the Pacific coast, not a plant. It is offered here as an alcohol-free vegetable-glycerin glycerite. It is a marine-animal extract and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease; please read the safety note below, as sea cucumber may affect blood clotting.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same whole Apostichopus californicus sea cucumber; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, a good choice for those avoiding alcohol; the tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method with a long shelf life. Choose whichever suits you. The material inside is identical, and the same notes apply to both.
How is this different from your other sea cucumbers?
We carry three different sea cucumber species, each a distinct marine animal. This page is Alaskan Sea Cucumber, Apostichopus californicus (the California sea cucumber; also written Parastichopus californicus), from the Pacific. Our Cucumaria frondosa is the orange-footed Atlantic sea cucumber, and our Holothuria atra is the black sea cucumber (lollyfish). They are different species from different oceans, so if the exact species matters to you, check the scientific name. This page is Apostichopus californicus.
How is Alaskan Sea Cucumber extract used?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops shown on the label, in a little water or juice, up to the suggested frequency. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, and keep out of reach of children.
