Frequently Asked Questions about Angelica Extract
What is angelica root extract used for?
Angelica root extract is a dietary supplement prepared from the dried root of Angelica archangelica, a large biennial or perennial herb of the family Apiaceae native to northern and central Europe, Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland, and parts of Russia. Among the most imposing plants in the European herbal tradition, the species can reach two meters in height and produces characteristic large compound umbels - the umbrella-shaped flower clusters shared by all members of the Apiaceae family. The root is the primary plant part used in herbal preparations; it contains essential oils including alpha-phellandrene, beta-phellandrene, alpha-pinene, limonene, and sabinene; furanocoumarins including bergapten and xanthotoxin; organic acids; resins; and terpene hydrocarbons. Angelica archangelica has been part of the traditional botanical practice of Northern Europe and Scandinavia for centuries, valued as a general wellness support herb in folk traditions from Iceland to the Alps. The plant also holds a significant place in culinary heritage: the roots and seeds are used to flavor liqueurs including Chartreuse, Benedictine, and gin botanicals, while the candied bright-green stem - sold simply as angelica in confectionery - is a classic pastry decoration in European baking. As a dietary supplement, angelica root extract is used to support general wellness. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between angelica root tincture and glycerite?
HawaiiPharm offers Angelica Root in two liquid formats. The Angelica Root Tincture uses food-grade alcohol as the primary solvent, the traditional method of herbal liquid extraction. The Angelica Root Glycerite is an alcohol-free alternative using vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents. Both formats are prepared from the same dried Angelica archangelica roots and are manufactured in HawaiiPharm's FDA-registered Hawaii facility with identity and purity testing conducted on each batch.
What is the botanical background of Angelica archangelica?
Angelica archangelica takes its species epithet from a medieval legend in which an archangel - identified in different sources as Michael or Raphael - appeared in a dream to reveal the plant as a remedy against plague, conferring on it the Latin archangelica and a lasting association with divine protection. The genus name Angelica, from the Latin angelicus (angelic), enshrined this celestial mythology in botanical nomenclature when the species was formally described by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum (1753). Native to cold northern climates - Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland, northern Russia, and high Alpine zones - Angelica archangelica thrives where few aromatic herbs survive. It occupies an important place in Nordic food culture: the Sami of Lapland traditionally ate the hollow stems as a vegetable, and the plant was cultivated in Iceland for centuries before modern vegetables arrived. In European confectionery, the candied bright-green stem became simply angelica - a pastry decoration still used in traditional baking. The roots and seeds flavor classic European liqueurs including Chartreuse and Benedictine, and contribute to gin botanical blends. Botanically, Angelica archangelica belongs to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), the same family as carrot (Daucus carota), parsley (Petroselinum crispum), fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), and the notoriously toxic poison hemlock (Conium maculatum). The compound umbels characteristic of all Apiaceae serve as accessible nectaries for a wide range of pollinators. A note on nomenclature: Angelica archangelica (European Angelica) is frequently confused in Western markets with Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai, Chinese Angelica); these are botanically distinct species with different traditional applications and phytochemical profiles.
How do I use angelica root liquid extract?
Adults: take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, juice, or tea, up to four times daily or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner. Shake well before each use. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, taking prescription medications, or managing an existing health condition. Keep out of reach of children. Do not exceed the suggested serving size.
Are there any precautions for using angelica root supplement?
Angelica archangelica root contains furanocoumarins - including bergapten and xanthotoxin - which can increase sensitivity to ultraviolet light. Individuals using this supplement should be aware of the potential for photosensitivity reactions during prolonged sun exposure. Angelica root is not recommended during pregnancy. Animal studies have reported uterine-stimulating effects, and the safety of Angelica archangelica root supplementation during pregnancy has not been established in clinical research. Nursing individuals should also avoid use. Individuals taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications - including warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel - should consult a qualified healthcare professional before use, as the coumarin content of angelica root may interact with such therapies. People with known allergy or sensitivity to plants in the Apiaceae family (carrot, celery, parsley, fennel, dill) may experience cross-reactive sensitivity to Angelica archangelica. If any adverse reaction occurs, discontinue use immediately. Consult a healthcare professional before use if you are taking prescription medications or managing a chronic health condition. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
