Agathosma betulina - Buchu Leaf (Barosma betulina)

Buchu (Agathosma betulina) is a fragrant shrub of the South African fynbos, long valued for its aromatic leaves. Our Buchu Leaf tincture captures the dried leaf in a concentrated, alcohol-based liquid extract.

About our Buchu Leaf Tincture:

We start with quality buchu leaf and use a classic, conventional alcohol extraction with organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, and water. It is a whole-leaf extract - not an isolate and not the essential oil - carrying the plant's natural profile. This is Agathosma betulina, round-leaf buchu, and specifically the leaf.

Suggested use: Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to four times a day, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving. See the safety note above. Drink the entire contents.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Buchu Extract
What is Buchu (Agathosma betulina)?
Buchu is a small aromatic shrub native to the Cape region of South Africa, botanically Agathosma betulina and formerly classified as Barosma betulina. It belongs to the Rutaceae, the same botanical family as citrus, and its dried leaves carry a distinctive scent often compared to blackcurrant. The specific plant used here is the round-leaf or short buchu, Agathosma betulina, which is the traditionally preferred type. This product is made from the dried LEAF, offered in two liquid forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. It is a whole-leaf liquid extract that carries the leaf's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated compound and not the concentrated essential oil, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. Please read the important safety note below before use, as buchu is not suitable for everyone.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Agathosma betulina leaf; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the leaf's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. See the safety note below.
Is this the same as buchu essential oil, and which species is it?
No, and both points are worth clarifying. First, this is a leaf extract, not buchu essential oil. Buchu oil is a highly concentrated aromatic oil used in flavor and fragrance work, and it is very rich in a compound called pulegone; our product is instead a whole-leaf liquid extract taken by the drop, not the concentrated oil. Second, the species: there are two commercial buchus. Ours is round-leaf buchu, Agathosma betulina, also called short buchu, which is the traditionally preferred type. It is different from oval-leaf or long-leaf buchu, Agathosma crenulata, which contains much more pulegone and is generally regarded as a lower grade. You may also see the old botanical name Barosma betulina, which is simply a synonym for Agathosma betulina. We label our product clearly by botanical name and plant part so there is no confusion with the oil or with the other species.
How do I use Buchu liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the important safety note below before use. Drink the entire contents.
Is Buchu extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully, because buchu has some important safety considerations. Do not use buchu during pregnancy, because it has traditionally been used to stimulate the uterus and is not considered safe in pregnancy; avoid it while breastfeeding as well. Buchu leaf naturally contains an aromatic compound called pulegone, which can stress the liver in large amounts, so do not exceed the suggested serving, and do not use buchu if you have liver disease. Buchu can also act as an irritating diuretic, so use caution if you have kidney disease or kidney inflammation. If you take any medication, especially diuretics or lithium, or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children and do not give to children. Discontinue use and consult your practitioner if any adverse reaction occurs. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Buchu (Agathosma Betulina) Leaf is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)

  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
