FEATURES AND DESCRIPTION:
  •   GLUTEN FREE
  •   Expertly extracted
  •   Burdock Fruit Tincture contains ONLY natural ingredients
  •   High Quality Burdock Fruit liquid extract - we use classic conventional methods of extraction. We meticulously produce our extracts according to precise standards where each herb is extracted according to the distinct characteristic of each plant.
  •   Concentrated Burdock Fruit liquid extract (traditional alcohol tincture)
  •   We strictly use ethically sourced raw material, organic alcohol, and vegetable glycerin USP

Burdock Fruit (Arctium Lappa) is the seed of greater burdock, a large biennial plant of the daisy family (Asteraceae). Burdock is famous for its hooked burrs, which cling to clothing and fur - the inspiration for Velcro. The part used here is the fruit - the small dried seeds held inside those burrs, known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Niu Bang Zi.

  •

WHOLE-FRUIT LIQUID EXTRACT: Made from the dried fruit (seed) of Arctium lappa, carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents rather than an isolated or standardized single compound.

  •

TRADITIONAL ALCOHOL EXTRACTION: A classic alcohol-based tincture, made with organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, and water, for a concentrated extract with a long shelf life.

  •

THE FRUIT, NOT THE ROOT: This product is the burdock fruit (seed, Niu Bang Zi). Burdock's edible root (gobo) is offered as a separate product.

  •

GREATER BURDOCK: This is Arctium lappa, related to common burdock (Arctium minus) and distinct from the toxic cocklebur (Xanthium).

  •

CLEARLY LABELED: Labeled by botanical name and plant part, so there is no confusion between the fruit and the root, or with cocklebur.

Arctium lappa - Burdock Fruit, Niu Bang Zi

Burdock (Arctium lappa) is the sturdy, broad-leaved plant whose bristly burrs are a familiar sight along paths and fields. Our Burdock Fruit tincture captures the dried seed in a concentrated, alcohol-based liquid extract.

About our Burdock Fruit Tincture:

We start with quality burdock fruit and use a classic, conventional alcohol extraction with organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, and water. It is a whole-fruit extract - not an isolate - carrying the plant's natural profile. This is Arctium lappa, greater burdock, and specifically the fruit.

Suggested use: Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to four times a day, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.*

Frequently Asked Questions about Burdock Extract
What is Burdock Fruit (Arctium lappa)?
Burdock is a large biennial plant of the daisy family (Asteraceae), botanically Arctium lappa and known as greater burdock. It is famous for its hooked burrs, which cling to clothing and fur - the inspiration for Velcro. This product uses the FRUIT of the plant: the small dried seeds held inside those burrs. In traditional Chinese herbalism the burdock fruit is known as Niu Bang Zi. It is worth knowing that burdock is more widely known for its ROOT - the edible gobo of Japanese cooking - which we offer as a separate product; this product is the fruit, not the root. The fruit naturally contains lignans and other constituents. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-fruit liquid extract that carries the fruit's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Arctium lappa fruit; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the fruit's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this the burdock fruit or the burdock root?
This is the burdock FRUIT - the seed - which is a different part from the burdock root. The distinction matters, because burdock is most famous for its root: the long, edible taproot known as gobo in Japanese cooking, and traditionally used as a herb. We offer that separately as burdock root, so you can choose the fruit (seed) or the root depending on what you want. The fruit, or seed, is known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Niu Bang Zi. A couple of other clarifications: our plant is Arctium lappa (greater burdock), which is closely related to common burdock (Arctium minus); and although burdock burrs look a bit like the burrs of cocklebur (Xanthium), those are a different and toxic plant - ours is Arctium lappa. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Arctium lappa) and plant part (fruit) so there is no confusion between the fruit and the root, or with cocklebur.
How do I use Burdock Fruit liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. See the safety note below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Burdock Fruit extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
A few notes apply. Burdock is in the daisy family (Asteraceae), so people who are allergic to ragweed, chamomile, chrysanthemums, marigolds, or daisies may also react to it - use caution if you have these sensitivities. Burdock may have a mild diuretic (water-losing) effect and may affect blood sugar, so use caution if you take diuretic or diabetes medication. Do not use burdock during pregnancy. If you are nursing, take any other medication, or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Burdock (Arctium Lappa) Fruit is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.

METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION

Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.

COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING

Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
  • Viscosity measurement
  • Refractometric analysis
