About Arctium lappa

Burdock (Arctium lappa) is a stout biennial of the daisy family, Asteraceae, native to Europe and temperate Asia and naturalized across North America, where it lines roadsides, barnyards, and streambanks. In its first year it forms a rosette of huge, heart-shaped, wavy-edged leaves, grey-woolly beneath; in the second it sends up a branched, grooved stem 1 to 2 meters tall topped with purple thistle-like flower heads enclosed in hooked bracts. Those bracts become the burrs that cling to clothing and fur and inspired the hook-and-loop fastener. The long, fleshy taproot is the vegetable gobo in Japan. We extract the dried root, leaf, and fruit (seed) separately.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
