Frequently Asked Questions about Fo-Ti Extract
What is Fo-Ti / He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum) root extract?
Fo-Ti is a climbing perennial of the knotweed family (Polygonaceae), botanically Polygonum multiflorum, and in modern classification also placed in the genera Fallopia and Reynoutria (Fallopia multiflora, Reynoutria multiflora) - the same plant. The part used here is the root. In traditional Chinese herbalism it is called He Shou Wu; Fo-Ti is a common Western trade name, and it is also known as Chinese knotweed and fleeceflower. The name He Shou Wu comes from an old legend about a man named Mr. He - this is the origin of the name only. The root is prepared in different traditional ways: raw, and processed with black beans (known as Zhi He Shou Wu). Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-root liquid extract that carries the root's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product. Please read the important liver-safety note below before use.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Polygonum multiflorum root; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the root's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. See the safety note below before use.
Is fo-ti the same as Japanese knotweed?
No, and this is an important distinction. Our fo-ti is Polygonum multiflorum, the He Shou Wu root. Japanese knotweed is a different plant, Polygonum japonicum (also classified as Reynoutria japonica or Fallopia japonica), which is the invasive plant often sold for its resveratrol content. Because both are called knotweed and both have been reclassified into the genera Fallopia and Reynoutria, they are easy to confuse - but they are different species with different uses. Ours is specifically the He Shou Wu root, not Japanese knotweed. On names, our plant is the same whether it is labeled Polygonum multiflorum, Fallopia multiflora, or Reynoutria multiflora, and it is also called fo-ti, Chinese knotweed, and fleeceflower. It is also prepared in raw and black-bean-processed (Zhi He Shou Wu) forms. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Polygonum multiflorum) and plant part (root).
How do I use Fo-Ti / He Shou Wu liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not use for prolonged periods. Please read the important liver-safety note below before use. Drink the entire contents.
Is Fo-Ti / He Shou Wu extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Please read this carefully, because fo-ti has an important safety consideration for the liver. Fo-Ti (He Shou Wu) has been associated with cases of liver injury, and consuming it may cause liver injury in some people. Do not use this product if you have a liver condition. Stop using it and consult a physician immediately if you develop any symptoms of liver trouble, such as unusual fatigue, abdominal pain, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice). Do not use it for prolonged periods of time. Fo-Ti may also have a mild laxative effect and cause loose stools in some people. Do not use during pregnancy or while nursing. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS

Our Fo-Ti (Polygonum Multiflorum) Root is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph.
