Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi), also sold as carom seed or ajowan, is a small seed spice of the carrot family (Apiaceae), long used in the kitchens of India, Pakistan and the Middle East. The part used is the dried seed. This tincture is prepared from the seed using a traditional alcohol extraction.
-
WHOLE-SEED LIQUID EXTRACT: Made from the dried seed of Trachyspermum ammi, carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents rather than an isolated compound.
-
TRADITIONAL ALCOHOL EXTRACTION: A classic alcohol-based tincture, with vegetable glycerin and purified water, offering a long shelf life.
-
THE THYME-LIKE AROMA: Ajwain's sharp, distinctive scent comes from thymol, the same aromatic constituent found in thyme. That is simply a component of the raw material.
-
THE SEED, NOT THE LEAF: This is the seed of Trachyspermum ammi. The leaf sold in India as ajwain leaf or ajwain patta is a different plant, Plectranthus amboinicus, in the mint family.
-
NOT A HOME INFUSION: This is a concentrated liquid extract taken by the drop. It is not the traditional home-made ajwain water, and it is not the essential oil.
-
CLEARLY LABELED: Labeled by botanical name (Trachyspermum ammi, syn. Carum copticum) and plant part, so there is no confusion with similarly named plants.
Trachyspermum ammi - Ajwain (Carom Seed)
Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) is the small, sharply aromatic seed used by the pinch in South Asian cooking. Our Ajwain extract captures the dried seed in a concentrated liquid tincture.
About our Ajwain Extract:
We start with quality, ethically sourced Trachyspermum ammi seed, extracted using the classic alcohol method for a highest-strength tincture with a long shelf life. It is a whole-seed extract - not an isolate - carrying the plant's natural profile. It is gluten-free.
Suggested use: Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner.*
Main Ingredients: Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) Dried Seed.
Other ingredients: organic alcohol, vegetable glycerin, crystal clear water.
Additional information about ingredients: Contains NO gluten or artificial color.
Suggested Use: Shake well before use. Take 20-30 drops in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times a day, or as directed by your practitioner. Do not use if seal is broken or missing. Store in a cool, dark place.
Safety information: Ajwain is an everyday culinary spice, but a concentrated liquid extract is not the same as a pinch in cooking. Do not exceed the suggested serving; the seed is rich in thymol, an aromatic constituent that is irritating in concentrated form. Do not use during pregnancy - animal studies have reported teratogenic effects and the seed has a long-standing traditional reputation as an emmenagogue. Avoid while nursing. Because ajwain belongs to the carrot family, people sensitive to that family, such as celery, carrot, fennel or coriander, may also react to it. Please note that this concentrated extract is not the traditional home-made ajwain water and is not intended for infants. Keep well out of reach of children. This tincture is made with alcohol, so excessive consumption may impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. If you take any prescription medication or have a health condition, consult your doctor before use.
