Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi), also sold as carom seed or ajowan, is a small seed spice of the carrot family (Apiaceae), long used in the kitchens of India, Pakistan and the Middle East. The part used is the dried seed. This tincture is prepared from the seed using a traditional alcohol extraction.

Safety information: Ajwain is an everyday culinary spice, but a concentrated liquid extract is not the same as a pinch in cooking. Do not exceed the suggested serving; the seed is rich in thymol, an aromatic constituent that is irritating in concentrated form. Do not use during pregnancy - animal studies have reported teratogenic effects and the seed has a long-standing traditional reputation as an emmenagogue. Avoid while nursing. Because ajwain belongs to the carrot family, people sensitive to that family, such as celery, carrot, fennel or coriander, may also react to it. Please note that this concentrated extract is not the traditional home-made ajwain water and is not intended for infants. Keep well out of reach of children.
