What is Ajwain / carom seed (Trachyspermum ammi) extract?
Ajwain is a small seed spice of the carrot family (Apiaceae), botanically Trachyspermum ammi and also listed under the older name Carum copticum. In English it is usually sold as carom seed or ajowan; regional names include omam in Tamil, yavani in Sanskrit and jowan in Bengali. Botanically the seed is a schizocarp fruit, and it is a familiar spice in Indian, Pakistani and Middle Eastern cooking, where a pinch is used for its sharp aroma. That aroma comes from thymol, the same aromatic constituent found in thyme, which is why ajwain smells strongly of thyme - this is simply a component of the raw material. Our extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-seed liquid extract carrying the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not isolated thymol and not the essential oil, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Trachyspermum ammi seed; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the seed's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is this ajwain leaf, ajwain water, or bishop's weed?
None of those, and each is worth separating. First, the plant part: this is the seed of Trachyspermum ammi. What is sold in India as ajwain leaf or ajwain patta is a completely different plant, Plectranthus amboinicus, a fleshy herb of the mint family sometimes called Cuban oregano - it shares the aroma but not the botany. Second, the form: ajwain water is a traditional home preparation made by steeping the seeds; our product is a concentrated liquid extract taken by the drop, which is not the same thing and should not be used interchangeably. Third, the name bishop's weed: you will sometimes see ajwain listed under it, but that name belongs mainly to other plants - Aegopodium podagraria, a garden weed, and Ammi majus, a quite different umbellifer. We do not use that name for this product. Finally, a note on searching: carom seeds with an s is our spice, while carom on its own is usually the board game. We label the botanical name (Trachyspermum ammi) and plant part on every page so there is no confusion.
How do I use Ajwain liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. Do not exceed the suggested serving.
Is Ajwain extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Ajwain is an everyday culinary spice, but a concentrated liquid extract is not the same as a pinch in cooking, and it is not right for everyone. The seed is rich in thymol, an aromatic constituent that is irritating in concentrated form, so do not exceed the suggested serving. Do not use this product during pregnancy: animal studies have reported teratogenic effects, and the seed has a long-standing traditional reputation as an emmenagogue. Avoid it while nursing. Because ajwain belongs to the carrot family, people sensitive to that family - celery, carrot, fennel, coriander - may also react to it. Please note as well that this concentrated extract is not the traditional home-made ajwain water and is not intended for infants; keep it well out of reach of children. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place.
