Important safety information - please read before use

Chili is a food, but this is a concentrated capsaicin extract with a few specific cautions.

  • Reflux and ulcers: capsaicin can worsen heartburn, acid reflux (GERD) and dyspepsia and irritate the stomach. If you have GERD, peptic ulcers or severe IBS, avoid high doses or use only with medical advice; overuse can cause heartburn, stomach pain or diarrhea in anyone. Do not exceed the serving.
  • Blood thinners: capsaicin may add to the effect of blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin (a bleeding risk). If you take blood thinners or ACE-inhibitor blood-pressure medicine, consult your practitioner first.
  • Eyes and skin: capsaicin burns on contact - keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes and wash your hands after handling.
  • Children: concentrated pepper extracts are not recommended for children under 12 without expert guidance.
  • Pregnancy / nursing: chili is fine as a food, but do not use a concentrated extract in pregnancy or while breastfeeding without professional advice.
  • Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions about Chipotle Extract
What is Chipotle (Capsicum annuum) whole pepper extract?
Chipotle is a liquid extract of the dried whole chipotle pepper, which is Capsicum annuum - a chili pepper of the Solanaceae (nightshade) family. A chipotle is specifically a ripe jalapeno that has been smoke-dried, giving it a smoky flavor. This alcohol-free version is a vegetable-glycerin glycerite. Chipotle is a food pepper, but this is a concentrated extract, and chili peppers are rich in capsaicin (the compound that makes them hot), which carries some specific cautions - especially for people with acid reflux or ulcers, or who take blood-thinning medicine. Please read the safety notes below. It should also not be confused with the Chipotle restaurant brand, which is unrelated to this botanical extract.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Capsicum annuum (chipotle) pepper; only the solvent differs. This alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving a milder carrier that suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format. The pepper inside is identical, and both are hot - please follow the safety notes for both.
How is chipotle different from cayenne, chili, Tabasco or habanero?
They are all chili peppers but not all the same. Chipotle, cayenne and plain "chili" on our site are all the same botanical species, Capsicum annuum - but they are different peppers and preparations: chipotle is specifically a smoke-dried jalapeno, cayenne is the cayenne pepper, and chili is a general chili fruit. Tabasco pepper is a different species, Capsicum frutescens, and habanero is another species again, Capsicum chinense. So they differ both in species and in heat and flavor. We label ours clearly as chipotle (Capsicum annuum) whole pepper - the smoke-dried jalapeno - so it is distinct from the others. (And note that "Chipotle" here is the pepper, not the restaurant chain of the same name.)
How do I use Chipotle liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is 20 to 30 drops (approximately 1 ml) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to a few times a day, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. It is hot, so start low and dilute well. Do not exceed the suggested serving - more can irritate the stomach. Keep it away from the eyes and wash your hands after use, as capsaicin burns on contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. The alcohol-free glycerite has a milder carrier. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Chipotle right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Chili pepper is an ordinary food, but a concentrated capsaicin extract has some specific cautions. Reflux and ulcers: capsaicin can worsen heartburn, acid reflux (GERD) and dyspepsia, and irritate the stomach - if you have GERD, peptic ulcers or severe IBS, avoid high doses or use only with medical advice; overuse can cause heartburn, stomach pain or diarrhea in anyone. Blood thinners: capsaicin may add to the effect of blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin (a bleeding risk); if you take blood thinners, ACE-inhibitor blood-pressure medicine, or other prescriptions, consult your practitioner first. Eyes and skin: capsaicin burns on contact - keep it away from the eyes and mucous membranes and wash your hands after handling. Children: concentrated pepper extracts are not recommended for children under 12 without expert guidance. Pregnancy and nursing: chili is fine as a food, but do not use a concentrated extract in pregnancy or while breastfeeding without professional advice. Do not use it to self-treat pain or any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
