Frequently Asked Questions about Birch Extract
What is Sweet Birch (Betula lenta) bark extract?
Sweet Birch is a liquid extract of the dried bark of Betula lenta, a tree of the Betulaceae family, also known as black birch, cherry birch, spice birch or mahogany birch. This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol. One thing matters a great deal for safety: sweet birch bark naturally contains salicylates, chiefly methyl salicylate (the compound behind the wintergreen scent), which is chemically related to aspirin. For that reason it is not suitable for everyone and must not be used by people who are allergic to aspirin or who take blood thinners - please read the safety notes carefully. It is a different product from white birch bark (Betula alba), from birch leaf (Betula pendula) and from wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens), even though wintergreen shares the same salicylate chemistry.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same sweet birch bark; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The same safety notes apply to both because the bark inside is identical.
Is sweet birch the same as white birch, birch leaf or wintergreen?
No - they are related but distinct, and the differences matter for safety. Our product is sweet birch (Betula lenta) BARK, which is naturally high in salicylates (methyl salicylate). White birch bark is a different species (Betula alba) valued mainly for betulin, and does not have the same salicylate profile. Birch leaf is yet another species (Betula pendula) and a different plant part, traditionally used as a mild diuretic. Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) is a completely different plant but shares the same methyl-salicylate chemistry - so the same aspirin-related cautions apply to it. We label ours specifically as Betula lenta bark so it is not confused with the others, and so its salicylate content is clear.
How do I use Sweet Birch liquid extract?
Shake well first. A typical amount is a small number of drops in 2 oz of water, up to the amount on the label, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner - do NOT exceed the suggested serving, because the bark contains salicylates. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to water softens the taste. Never use concentrated birch or wintergreen essential oil internally - it is toxic. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light, out of reach of children.
Is Sweet Birch right for everyone? Safety information.
Please read this carefully. Salicylates: sweet birch bark naturally contains salicylates, chiefly methyl salicylate, which is closely related to aspirin. Aspirin allergy: do NOT use this product if you are allergic or sensitive to aspirin or other salicylates. Medications: do NOT use it if you take aspirin, blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet medicines), or any other product containing salicylates or methyl salicylate, because the effects can add up. Children and teenagers: do NOT give it to children or teenagers, especially during or after a viral illness, because salicylates are linked to Reye's syndrome. Pregnancy and nursing: do NOT use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Dose: do not exceed the suggested serving, and never ingest concentrated birch or wintergreen essential oil, which can be poisonous even in small amounts. Allergy: birch pollen and bark can cause skin or respiratory sensitivity in some people. Do not use it to self-treat pain, joint or muscle problems - see a qualified doctor instead. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains alcohol and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. ETHICALLY SOURCED, NATURAL INGREDIENTS
Our Birch (Betula Lenta) Bark is selected from regions with optimal growing conditions to support a high concentration of active constituents. We work only with trusted suppliers and focus on sourcing clean, well-preserved botanical material suitable for high-quality liquid extraction.

As a solvent, we use alcohol to preserve the integrity of the extract and support a clean extraction process.
To verify botanical identity and ensure consistency, all raw materials are tested in our laboratory using established analytical techniques. These include High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) for plant authentication and fingerprinting, or Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and other in-house methods. Our approach is guided by relevant standards such as those of the USP and Ph. Eur., ISO 17025 and cGLP, allowing us to maintain rigorous quality control, ensuring the material meets our specifications for identity, purity and composition.
METICULOUS EXTRACT PREPARATION
Hawaii Pharm determines the optimal herb-to-menstruum ratio for each botanical. For alcohol-based extracts, we use a carefully balanced alcohol blend to ensure maximum extraction of active compounds while preserving the plant's natural integrity.
Our master herbalists analyze each batch and adjust extraction parameters as needed, ensuring consistent quality despite natural variations in botanical sources.
The result is a potent, stable liquid extract that captures the full spectrum of the botanical's benefits.
COMPREHENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING
Every batch undergoes multiple quality assurance tests including:
  • Organoleptic evaluation (color, consistency, aroma)
  • FTIR and/or HPTLC spectral analysis for identity confirmation
  • Microbiological testing (total plate count, E. coli, coliforms)
  • Yeast and mold screening
  • Alcohol content verification
