Bones Support Alcohol-Free Drops

This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of three herbs extracted together: the yellow root bark of the barberry shrub, the root of the Siberian eleuthero shrub, and the garlic bulb. Each is also sold on its own. It is a traditional herbal product - barberry interacts with many prescription medicines and is unsuitable in pregnancy - please read the safety information below before use.

What is in the blend

  • Barberry root bark - the bright yellow inner bark of the root of a thorny European hedgerow shrub with drooping clusters of red berries. The yellow color comes from berberine, the same bitter alkaloid found in goldenseal and Oregon grape.
  • Eleuthero root - the root of a spiny woodland shrub of eastern Siberia, northern China and Korea. It is often sold as Siberian ginseng, but it is not a true ginseng - a different genus in the same plant family.
  • Garlic bulb - the familiar kitchen bulb, cultivated for at least five thousand years; the dried clove is used here.

Why the alcohol-free drops

The three dried herbs are extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle - the version to choose if you avoid alcohol. Glycerin gives the drops a mild, naturally sweet taste that softens the bitter, garlicky note of the herbs.

What is a glycerite?

A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin is a clear, naturally sweet liquid from plant oils; it extracts and preserves the water-soluble parts of the herbs. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, keep the bottle refrigerated after opening. The glycerin and water percentages are printed on the label.

How to use

Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Use for short periods only - berberine-containing herbs are traditionally taken for two to three weeks at a time, not continuously. Refrigerate after opening and use within the period printed on the label.

Drops or tincture?

If you prefer the classic alcohol-based extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, the same three-herb blend is available as Bones Support Tincture - the alcohol-based version. The herbs and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.

Important safety information - please read before use

Barberry interacts with many prescription medicines and is unsuitable in pregnancy; garlic affects blood clotting. Please read before use.

  • Infections: an infection of the bone or any other infection is a medical emergency that needs a doctor and prescribed treatment. This herbal product is not for infections and must never replace antibiotics.
  • Prescription medicines: berberine in barberry blocks the liver enzymes that process many drugs (CYP3A4, CYP2D6 and P-glycoprotein) and can raise the levels of warfarin, statins, cyclosporine and other medicines. Ask your pharmacist before combining this blend with any prescription medicine. Garlic can lower the levels of HIV protease inhibitors such as saquinavir.
  • Bleeding and surgery: garlic slows blood clotting. Do not combine with blood thinners or aspirin without medical advice, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Pregnancy, nursing and infants: do not use. Berberine can cause or worsen jaundice in newborns.
  • Blood pressure and blood sugar: all three herbs can affect them. Use caution with blood-pressure or diabetes medication, and do not use eleuthero if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • Digoxin: eleuthero can raise digoxin levels. Do not combine.
  • G6PD deficiency: do not use.
  • Sleep: eleuthero in high amounts may cause sleeplessness. Take it earlier in the day.
  • Age and duration: not for children. Use for short periods only.
  • Garlic may cause body odor and stomach upset.
  • If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Bones Support Alcohol-Free Drops?
Bones Support is a three-herb liquid blend: barberry root bark (Berberis vulgaris), eleuthero root (Eleutherococcus senticosus) and garlic bulb (Allium sativum), extracted together in vegetable glycerin and purified water, with no alcohol. Barberry is a thorny European hedgerow shrub whose yellow inner root bark is rich in the alkaloid berberine; eleuthero is a spiny woodland shrub of Siberia and northern China, often called Siberian ginseng; garlic is the familiar kitchen bulb, used here as the dried clove. Each is also sold on its own. It is an herbal glycerite, not a capsule. It is a botanical product and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please read the safety note below - barberry interacts with many prescription medicines and is unsuitable in pregnancy, and garlic affects blood clotting.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free drops and the tincture?
Both contain the same three herbs in the same proportions; only the extraction liquid differs. These drops are a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water - no alcohol, a milder and naturally sweet taste that softens the bitter, garlicky note of the herbs, best kept refrigerated after opening. The tincture uses organic alcohol with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic method with the longest shelf life at room temperature. Choose whichever suits you; the safety notes apply to both.
Is eleuthero the same as ginseng? How is Bones Support different from Strong Bones?
Eleuthero is often sold as Siberian ginseng, but it is not a true ginseng: it belongs to the same plant family (Araliaceae) as Panax ginseng yet is a different genus with different constituents, and the name Siberian ginseng may no longer be used on labels in the United States. Barberry root bark is the yellow inner bark of the root, the part richest in berberine - the same alkaloid found in goldenseal and Oregon grape. Bones Support is a different formula from our Strong Bones blend, which is built on horsetail, nettle and red clover; the two share no herbs. Barberry, eleuthero and garlic are each available as single extracts, and garlic and eleuthero also appear in our Circulation Support blend.
How do I use Bones Support Drops?
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving. Use for short periods only - berberine-containing herbs are traditionally taken for two to three weeks at a time, not continuously.
