Cornflower blue blooms”

Sara Kendrick

This simple but amazingly beautiful blue flower adds a dash of colour and embellishment to any field or garden. Cornflower’s scientific name is Centaurea cyanus. This annual flower belongs to the Asteraceae family. It originated in Europe, but now is quite widespread. The flower got its name due to the fact that it often grew in the cornfields. Previously it was considered to be just a weed but nowadays this flower is grown in many gardens both as an ornamental and medicinal plant. Cornflowers are very popular in the United States, Canada and Australia though they aren’t native to these countries and were exported there. Unfortunately, cornflowers begin to disappear in Europe due to the active use of new agricultural technologies. The plant is usually 40-90 cm long and has a grey-green stem. The leaves are lancelike and their length is about 1-4 cm. The flowerheads are 1.5-3 cm diameter, ray florets enclose the central cluster of florets. The blossom time lasts throughout all the summer. In fact, the flowers can not only be intense blue but also white, red, pink, purple. All the colors except blue were created artificially.
