Green Tea and Holy Basil Tincture
This is an alcohol-based liquid extract (tincture) of two leaves extracted together in equal parts and named for its ingredients: the unfermented leaf of the tea plant and the leaf of tulsi, the sacred basil of India. Both are also sold on their own. It is a traditional herbal product that contains caffeine and has several important cautions - please read the safety information below before use.

- Origin: Responsibly sourced, cultivated botanicals (green tea from Nepal, holy basil from India). Gluten free. Made in the USA.
What is in the blend
- Green tea leaf - the young leaf of the tea shrub of the Himalayan foothills and East Asia, picked and dried quickly without the oxidation that makes black tea; it keeps its grassy taste, its catechins and its natural caffeine.
- Holy basil leaf - tulsi, the purple-tinged basil planted in courtyards and temple gardens across India, with a peppery, clove-like scent. It is a different species from sweet basil, the kitchen herb, and from vana tulsi (Ocimum gratissimum), which we sell separately.
Why a tincture
The two dried leaves are macerated together in organic alcohol with a little vegetable glycerin and water - the classic herbal method. A tincture keeps for years at room temperature in a cool, dark place, has a brisk, grassy, clove-like taste, and a few drops disappear in a glass of water or juice. A serving of 20 to 30 drops is roughly 1 ml of liquid, so the amount of alcohol per serving is small.
How to use
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water or juice and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Do not exceed the label serving, and take it earlier in the day because of the caffeine. Do not use continuously for more than eight weeks without a practitioner. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap tight.
Tincture or drops?
If you avoid alcohol or prefer a milder taste, the same two-leaf blend is available as Green Tea and Holy Basil Alcohol-Free Drops - the glycerite version. The leaves and proportions are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
Important safety information - please read before use
Both herbs can lower blood sugar, holy basil interacts with blood thinners, and the blend contains caffeine. Please read before use.
- Blood sugar: both herbs can lower blood sugar. If you have diabetes, low blood sugar or take diabetes medication, use this blend only with your doctor, and never use it in place of treatment.
- Blood thinners and surgery: holy basil can slow blood clotting. Do not combine with warfarin, aspirin or other blood thinners without medical advice, and stop use at least two weeks before surgery.
- Liver: concentrated green tea extracts have been linked to rare liver injury. Stop and see a doctor if you notice dark urine, yellowing skin or eyes, or stomach pain, and do not combine with other green tea extract products.
- Caffeine: contains caffeine. It can cause sleeplessness, nervousness or a rapid heartbeat; do not combine with other caffeine products, take it earlier in the day, and use caution if you have a heart condition or anxiety.
- Pregnancy, nursing and fertility: do not use. Holy basil has affected fertility in animal studies, and green tea reduces folate absorption.
- Iron: green tea reduces iron absorption. Take it apart from meals and iron supplements, and consult your doctor if you have anemia.
- Medicines: green tea can reduce the absorption of some drugs, including nadolol, lisinopril and certain statins. Take them at a different time and ask your pharmacist.
- Age and duration: not for children. Do not use continuously for more than eight weeks.
- Allergies: holy basil is a mint-family (Lamiaceae) plant.
- Contains alcohol. If you have a medical condition or take medication, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
