Aloe Ferox (Aloe ferox), the Cape aloe or bitter aloe, is a single-stemmed succulent of the Asphodelaceae family, native to the Eastern and Western Cape of South Africa and Lesotho, where it dots dry hillsides and valley scrub. It grows 2 to 3 meters tall, with a rosette of thick, dull green to reddish leaves armed with reddish-brown teeth, the old dead leaves hanging as a skirt around the stem. In winter it sends up a branched candelabra of orange-red tubular flowers. The leaf yields a dark, intensely bitter sap that dries into glossy black lumps known as Cape aloes, and a clear inner gel. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
