Avaram (Senna auriculata, formerly Cassia auriculata), also called tanner's cassia, is a much-branched evergreen shrub of the pea family, Fabaceae, native to dry scrub and wasteland across peninsular India and Sri Lanka, and the state flower of Telangana. It grows 1 to 3 meters with smooth reddish-brown bark, pinnate leaves of 8 to 12 pairs of small oblong leaflets with ear-shaped stipules at the base, and loose clusters of large, bright yellow, veined flowers through much of the year. The flat, papery brown pods are 7 to 11 centimeters long. The bark is a long-established tanning material for leather in South India. We extract the dried powder.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
