Bai Bu (Stemona sessilifolia, listed in our catalog by the Latin trade name Radix Stemonae Sessilifoliae) is a perennial herb of the Stemonaceae family, native to eastern China from Shandong and Jiangsu to Zhejiang and Anhui, and to Japan. Unlike its twining relatives Stemona japonica and Stemona tuberosa, which share the Chinese name, it grows erect to 30 to 60 centimeters, with whorls of three or four oval leaves and small pale green flowers in the leaf axils. Below ground it forms a cluster of spindle-shaped, fleshy tuberous roots 5 to 12 centimeters long that dry wrinkled and yellowish-white with a bitter, slightly sweet taste. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
