About Paeonia lactiflora

Bai Shao Yao (Paeonia lactiflora), the Chinese or common garden peony, is a herbaceous perennial of the peony family, Paeoniaceae, native to northern China, Inner Mongolia, Korea, and eastern Siberia, and the parent of most garden peonies grown in the West. It forms a bushy clump 60 to 90 centimeters tall with glossy, deeply divided dark green leaves and, in late spring, large, fragrant, bowl-shaped flowers 8 to 16 centimeters across, white to pale pink in the wild type. The thick, cylindrical roots of cultivated plants are boiled and peeled to give the pale, dense product known as white peony root. We extract the dried root.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
