Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica), the Dahurian angelica, is a tall biennial or short-lived perennial of the carrot family, Apiaceae, native to northern China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia, and eastern Siberia, and grown as a crop in Sichuan, Zhejiang, and Henan. It sends up a hollow, purplish, ribbed stem 1 to 2.5 meters tall with large, twice- or thrice-divided leaves on inflated sheaths and broad, flat-topped umbels of tiny white flowers followed by flat, winged fruits. The thick, conical taproot is yellowish-brown outside and white and mealy within, with a strong, sweet, aromatic smell; sliced root pieces show a ring of brown oil dots. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
