Barrenwort (Epimedium grandiflorum), also sold as horny goat weed and known in China as Yin Yang Huo, is a clump-forming perennial of the barberry family, Berberidaceae, native to the woodlands of Japan, Korea, and northeastern China. It grows 20 to 40 centimeters from a creeping rhizome, with wiry stems carrying compound leaves of heart-shaped, spiny-edged leaflets that are bronze-tinted when young. In spring it bears loose sprays of distinctive flowers, white, pink, or violet, each with four long, curved spurs that give them the look of a tiny bishop's hat. The leaves are leathery, papery when dried, and bitter. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
