Boat Sterculia (Scaphium affine), known in Chinese as Pang Da Hai and in Thailand as malva nut, is a tall rainforest tree of the mallow family, Malvaceae, native to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and the Malay Peninsula. It grows 30 to 40 meters with a straight, buttressed trunk, large leathery leaves, and boat-shaped, papery fruit wings that carry the seed as they spin to the ground, which explains the English name. The seed is an oval, wrinkled, dark brown nut 2 to 3 centimeters long; dropped into water it swells overnight into a soft, brown, spongy jelly that is sweetened as a drink. We extract the dried seed.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
