Brucea (Brucea javanica), known in Chinese as Ya Dan Zi, is an evergreen shrub or small tree of the quassia family, Simaroubaceae, native to southern China, Taiwan, Indochina, Malaysia, Indonesia, and northern Australia, where it grows in open scrub and forest edges. It reaches 1 to 3 meters with softly hairy, pinnate leaves of 5 to 11 toothed leaflets and long, slender panicles of tiny dark purple flowers. The fruits are oval drupes 6 to 10 millimeters long that ripen from green to black and dry to a wrinkled, hard, black nut; the whole plant, above all the seed kernel, is extremely bitter. We extract the dried fruit.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
