Cacao (Theobroma cacao) is a small evergreen tree of the mallow family, Malvaceae, native to the upper Amazon basin and domesticated in Central America and Mexico, where the Maya and Aztecs drank it; today it is grown in the shade of taller trees across West Africa, Indonesia, and Latin America. It reaches 4 to 8 meters with large, glossy, drooping leaves and clusters of tiny pink-white flowers that sprout directly from the trunk. The ribbed, football-shaped pods ripen yellow, orange, or purple and hold 30 to 50 seeds in sweet white pulp; fermented and dried, these bitter seeds are the cocoa beans of chocolate. We extract the dried beans.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
