Chang Shan (Dichroa febrifuga), the blue evergreen hydrangea, is an evergreen shrub of the hydrangea family, Hydrangeaceae, native to moist forests and shaded ravines from Nepal and the eastern Himalaya across southern China to Taiwan, Indochina, and the Philippines. It grows 1 to 2 meters with glossy, opposite, lance-shaped leaves 10 to 20 centimeters long and loose, branched clusters of small, five-petaled flowers that open pink in bud and turn a striking china-blue, followed by berries of an even deeper metallic blue. The root is woody, twisted, yellowish inside, and bitter. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
