Chen Xiang (Aquilaria sinensis), the Chinese agarwood or eaglewood tree, is an evergreen of the Thymelaeaceae family, native to the lowland forests of Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, and Fujian in southern China. It grows 5 to 15 meters with smooth grey bark, glossy oblong leaves, and clusters of small yellow-green, fragrant flowers followed by woody, pear-shaped capsules. The pale, soft wood is ordinary until the tree is wounded; it then slowly saturates the damaged heartwood with dark, dense, fragrant resin, producing agarwood, which sinks in water and gives off a deep, sweet, balsamic smoke when burned. It is the costliest raw material of incense and perfumery. We extract the dried wood.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
