Chi Shao (Paeonia rubra in our catalog, a name with no botanical standing; red peony root comes from wild Paeonia lactiflora and Paeonia veitchii) is the unpeeled, sun-dried root of herbaceous peonies of the peony family, Paeoniaceae, gathered on grassy slopes and forest edges of Inner Mongolia, northeastern China, and the mountains of Sichuan. The plants grow 50 to 90 centimeters with deeply divided dark green leaves and large, fragrant, bowl-shaped flowers of white to rose-pink in late spring. Where white peony root is boiled and peeled, Chi Shao keeps its wrinkled, dark brown skin and pinkish-white, radially cracked interior. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
