Chlorella (Chlorella vulgaris) is not a plant in the everyday sense but a single-celled green microalga of the Chlorellaceae family, found in freshwater ponds, ditches, and damp soil on every continent. Each spherical cell is only 2 to 10 micrometers across, with a single cup-shaped chloroplast that gives it a deep grass-green color; it reproduces by splitting into daughter cells and can double its mass within hours in sunlight. Commercial chlorella is grown in open ponds and glass tubes in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Germany, then centrifuged and spray-dried into a fine, dark green powder with a seaweed-like smell. We extract the dried entire plant.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
