Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) are the dried flower buds of an evergreen tree of the myrtle family, Myrtaceae, native to the Maluku Islands of eastern Indonesia and grown today in Indonesia, Zanzibar, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka. The tree reaches 8 to 12 meters with smooth grey bark, glossy, aromatic, pointed leaves that are pinkish when young, and clusters of flower buds at the branch tips. The buds are picked by hand when they have turned from green to pink, then sun-dried into the hard, dark brown, nail-shaped spice; they are intensely fragrant with eugenol and leave a hot, numbing sensation on the tongue. We extract the dried flower buds.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
