Cochin Cardamon (listed in our catalog as Caoguo Amomum, a garbled form of the Chinese name Cao Guo for Amomum tsao-ko, now Lanxangia tsaoko) is a tall perennial of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae, native to the mountain forests of Yunnan, Guangxi, and northern Vietnam. Leafy stems rise 2 to 3 meters, while the flower spikes and fruit clusters sit at ground level. The fruit is an oval, ridged, reddish capsule 2 to 4 centimeters long that dries to a hard, brown, grooved pod with a smoky, camphor-like scent. True Cochin cardamom, by contrast, is a Kerala grade of green cardamom, Elettaria cardamomum. We extract the dried fruit.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
