Couch (Elymus repens, long known as Agropyron repens), the couch grass, quackgrass, or twitch, is a perennial of the grass family, Poaceae, native to Europe, North Africa, and temperate Asia and now a stubborn weed of fields, gardens, and roadsides across North America. It grows 30 to 120 centimeters with flat, dull green, slightly rough leaves that have small, clasping ears at the base, and slender wheat-like flower spikes in summer. Its real character lies underground: long, tough, pale yellow, jointed rhizomes with sharp, pointed tips spread for meters and resprout from every fragment the hoe leaves behind. The rhizome tastes faintly sweet. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
