Curry (Murraya koenigii, now classified by Kew as Bergera koenigii), the curry leaf tree or kadi patta, is a small evergreen tree of the citrus family, Rutaceae, native to India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh and grown in dooryards across South India and wherever Indian communities have settled. It reaches 4 to 6 meters with dark grey bark and pinnate leaves of 11 to 21 small, glossy, slightly asymmetrical leaflets that smell intensely of curry and citrus when crushed; clusters of small, fragrant white flowers are followed by shiny black berries. The leaves are fried in hot oil at the start of South Indian dishes. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
