Desmodium (Desmodium adscendens), a tick trefoil known in Ghana as amor seco, is a low, trailing perennial of the pea family, Fabaceae, native to tropical rainforests and clearings of West and Central Africa and of Central and South America, where it carpets damp ground and climbs the bases of trees. Its slender, hairy stems spread 30 to 50 centimeters and carry trifoliate leaves of small oval leaflets. Loose racemes of tiny pink to violet pea flowers are followed by flat pods divided into several jointed segments covered in hooked hairs, which cling to passing animals and trousers and break apart one segment at a time. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
