About Harpagophytum procumbens

Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens), also called grapple plant, is a prostrate perennial of the sesame family, Pedaliaceae, native to the red sands of the Kalahari in Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa, where it sprawls across the ground after the summer rains. From a deep central taproot it sends out trailing stems up to 2 meters long with grey-green, lobed leaves and showy pink to purple trumpet flowers. The fruit is a woody capsule armed with long, curved, barbed arms that snag the feet of grazing animals, hence the name. Harvesters dig the secondary tubers and sun-dry them into bitter brown discs. We extract the dried root tuber.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
