About Harpagophytum zeyheri

Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum zeyheri) is the second of the two devil's claw species, a prostrate perennial of the sesame family, Pedaliaceae, native to sandy savanna and woodland in northern Namibia, southern Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and northern Botswana, and harvested alongside Harpagophytum procumbens, from which it is told apart by its shorter fruit arms and less deeply lobed leaves. Trailing stems spread from a deep taproot after the rains, with grey-green leaves and pink to mauve trumpet flowers. The woody fruit carries hooked, barbed arms that catch on hooves and fur. Secondary storage tubers grow off the taproot and are sliced and sun-dried into bitter discs. We extract the dried root.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
