Dragon Blood (Daemonorops draco, now classified by Kew as Calamus draco) is a climbing rattan palm of the palm family, Arecaceae, native to the rainforests of Sumatra, Borneo, and the Malay Peninsula. Its slender, spiny stems scramble 10 to 20 meters through the canopy, with feathery pinnate leaves whose tips end in whip-like hooks, and clusters of round fruits about 2 centimeters across covered in glossy scales. As the fruits ripen, a brittle, dark red resin oozes between the scales; it is knocked off, sifted, and melted into sticks or cakes that break with a glassy fracture and show a deep blood-red color when powdered. We extract the dried resin.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
