Dragon's Tongue (Sauropus rostratus, now classified by Kew as Breynia rostrata), known in China as Long Li Ye, is a small evergreen shrub of the Phyllanthaceae family, formerly placed with the spurges, native to limestone hills and open forest in Guangdong, Guangxi, and Yunnan in southern China and in northern Vietnam. It grows 1 to 3 meters with slender, angular branches and alternate, oblong to lance-shaped, leathery leaves 5 to 15 centimeters long, dark green with a pale stripe along the midrib, whose shape suggested a dragon's tongue. Tiny greenish flowers in the leaf axils are followed by small beaked capsules. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
