Espinheira Santa (Monteverdia ilicifolia, long known as Maytenus ilicifolia) is an evergreen shrub or small tree of the bittersweet family, Celastraceae, native to southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina. It grows 3-5 m tall with stiff, glossy, holly-like leaves edged in sharp spines, which give it the Portuguese name meaning "holy thorn". Small greenish flowers are followed by orange-red capsules. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
