Fumitory (Fumaria officinalis), the common fumitory or earth smoke, is a delicate annual of the poppy family, Papaveraceae, native to Europe and western Asia and a widespread weed of fields and gardens. Its weak, sprawling stems carry grey-green, finely cut leaves and small spikes of tubular pink flowers tipped with dark purple. From a distance the foliage looks like smoke rising from the ground, which gave the plant its Latin and English names. The herb tastes bitter and salty. We extract the dried herb.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
