Garcinia (Garcinia indica), the kokum tree, is an evergreen tree of the mangosteen family, Clusiaceae, native to the Western Ghats of India. It grows 10-18 m with a drooping, pyramidal crown, glossy, dark green leaves and small, four-petaled flowers. The round purple fruit has a sour, fleshy rind that is dried to a dark, sticky spice called kokum, a souring agent of Konkani and Goan cooking, and the seeds yield a pale, firm butter. We extract the dried fruit.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
