Grains Of Paradise (Aframomum melegueta), also called melegueta pepper or alligator pepper, is a reed-like perennial of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae, native to the swampy coasts of West Africa from Sierra Leone to Nigeria. Leafy stems reach 1.5 m with narrow lance-shaped leaves and trumpet-shaped purple flowers at ground level. The pods hold many small, reddish-brown, angular seeds with a hot, peppery bite and a hint of cardamom and citrus. We extract the dried seed.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
