Gravel Root (Eutrochium purpureum, formerly Eupatorium purpureum), the sweet Joe-Pye weed, is a tall perennial of the daisy family, Asteraceae, native to moist woods and meadows of eastern and central North America. Stems 1.5-2 m high, often purple at the leaf nodes, carry whorls of three or four lance-shaped leaves that smell of vanilla when bruised, topped by domed clusters of dusty pink flowers. The woody root is tough and purplish-brown. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
