Gynostemma (Gynostemma pentaphyllum), known as jiaogulan or southern ginseng, is a slender climbing perennial vine of the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae, native to southern China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia. It climbs by tendrils with palmate leaves of five serrated leaflets and tiny greenish-white flowers, followed by small black berries. The leaves taste slightly bitter and then sweet, and in Guizhou and Guangxi they are brewed as an everyday tea. We extract the dried leaf.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
