Hou Pu (Magnolia officinalis), the houpu magnolia, is a deciduous tree of the magnolia family, Magnoliaceae, native to the mountains of central and southwestern China. It grows 15-20 m with very large, obovate leaves up to 40 cm long clustered at the branch tips, and fragrant, creamy-white, cup-shaped flowers 10-15 cm across in late spring. The thick, purplish-brown bark is aromatic with a bitter, pungent taste and an oily inner surface when fresh. We extract the dried bark.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
