Hu Zhang (Reynoutria japonica, formerly Polygonum cuspidatum), the Japanese knotweed, is a vigorous perennial of the knotweed family, Polygonaceae, native to Japan, China and Korea and a notorious invasive in Europe and North America. Hollow, bamboo-like, red-speckled stems reach 3 m each year from a deep rhizome, with broad, shield-shaped leaves and sprays of tiny creamy flowers in late summer. The root is yellow-brown inside with a bitter, slightly astringent taste. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
