Huang Bo (Phellodendron chinense), the Chinese cork tree, is a deciduous tree of the citrus family, Rutaceae, native to central and southwestern China. It grows 10-15 m with thick, soft, deeply furrowed grey bark, pinnate leaves of 7-15 leaflets and small yellow-green flowers followed by black, berry-like fruits. The inner bark is bright yellow from berberine, and when stripped and dried it has an intensely bitter taste and stains saliva yellow when chewed. We extract the dried bark.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
