Huang Jing (Polygonatum kingianum), the Solomon's seal of southwestern China, is a perennial of the asparagus family, Asparagaceae, native to Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and northern Vietnam. Arching stems to 1 m carry whorls of narrow leaves with curled tips and hanging clusters of tubular pink or white flowers, followed by red berries. The thick, jointed, yellowish rhizome is sweet and sticky, and in trade it is steamed and dried to a soft, dark, honey-flavored piece. We extract the dried root.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
