About Picrasma excelsa

Jamaican Quassia (Picrasma excelsa), the bitterwood, is a tall deciduous tree of the quassia family, Simaroubaceae, native to Jamaica and the Lesser Antilles. It grows 15-25 m with smooth grey bark, pinnate leaves of 7-13 glossy leaflets and panicles of small yellow-green flowers followed by black, pea-sized fruits. The pale yellow wood and bark are odorless but among the most bitter substances known, and shavings sold as quassia chips flavor bitters and aperitifs. We extract the dried bark.

Tincture or alcohol-free drops?

Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
