Japanese Quince (Chaenomeles speciosa), the flowering quince or mu gua in China, is a thorny deciduous shrub of the rose family, Rosaceae, native to China and grown widely as an early-spring ornamental. It grows 2-3 m with glossy, oval leaves and clusters of scarlet, pink or white apple-like flowers that open on bare branches. The fragrant, hard, greenish-yellow fruits are the size of a small apple and too sour to eat raw; they are dried in slices that are wrinkled and reddish-brown. We extract the dried fruit.
Tincture or alcohol-free drops?
Both start from the same dried plant material and cold maceration. The tincture uses organic alcohol
as the solvent, keeps for years and is the classic herbal form. The alcohol-free drops (glycerite) use
vegetable glycerin and purified water, taste mildly sweet and suit anyone avoiding alcohol. The amount of
dried herb per serving is printed on each label.
